Supporting owners encapsulates the underlying ethos John applies to all his engagements. Whatever the brief, John always takes the time to gain an understanding of an owner's needs, expectations and level of understanding and experience. This allows him to tailor his advice so that owners are better informed and supported, whether learning about boat handling and sail trim, equipping a new boat and passage-making, or in decision-making as owners consider the myriad of options inherent in boat ownership and operation. John's experience allows him to liaise directly with factory representatives, suppliers, tradespeople and regulatory bodies, interrogate and interpret information and advice and provide his perspective, to inform owners decision-making and alleviate stress and concerns. At the end of the day, you're not on your own if John's involved.
Passage Planning & Assistance
The founding reason for SYWCAO’s existence - providing assistance to those with the dream, desire or plan to leave sight of the shore and explore the world beyond the coastline, but with doubts about your experience or the knowledge of how to do so. Having skippered and sailed many thousands of miles offshore and across oceans in a variety of yachts and conditions, John is happy to discuss your goals and plans and help you realise them. Whether you’re seeking advice and guidance on planning your voyage or needing John onboard for peace of mind and onboard tuition, he’s happy to discuss your needs and see how best he can help you achieve your goals.
Yacht Delivery
Whether you’re wanting a boat delivered from Sydney to Newcastle, or from the Med to New Zealand, John is willing and able to discuss your plans and get your boat safely to you or your chosen destination. Having skippered and sailed in Europe, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand and in the Southern Ocean (to Antartica) he’s happy to consider any voyage, to and from any destination. And having coordinated the commissioning of new luxury cruising catamarans and power boats in Australia and overseas, John is comfortable with taking delivery of new or secondhand boats worldwide, undertake comprehensive pre-delivery inspections and assessments on your behalf, and liaise with manufacturers, brokers and local trades on work that that may be required prior to the delivery of your yacht, or your arrival to take delivery yourself!
Instruction
Having taught adults inshore and offshore sailing based in Sydney, Australia, including extended passages with up to 10 novice crew to destinations such as The Whitsundays and Lord Howe Island, John is completely comfortable providing guidance and tuition to any level of sailor, inshore and offshore. Whether you’re wanting to feel more confident in handling your own boat on and off the dock, taking others out and ensuring their safety and enjoyment, or you’re wanting to get more experience on extended offshore passages, John is happy to discuss your needs and work out an approach to help you feel more confident in taking control of your boat and sailing inshore or offshore.

John is an RYA Yachtmaster and experienced offshore sailing instructor and delivery skipper based near Brisbane, Australia. He has sailed and skippered a variety of yachts across thousands of miles of offshore and ocean voyages in various parts of the world, including Antarctica. He has worked in various aspects of the marine industry, including teaching hundreds of adults the skills, knowledge and approaches required to participate in inshore and offshore sailing.
